Add in some raw food!
Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at 06:23PM Here at Immortal Dog we believe the best way to feed your pet is a raw diet. This is what our dogs are designed to eat and flourish on.
Dogs are designed as carnivores.
♦ Teeth that rip and tear
♦ Jaws that are hinged to open and close, not move side to side
♦ Short, straight digestive tract
♦ Opportunistic Hunters – they hunt but not always successful
♦ When unable to eat fresh kill, will eat a variety of available options - opportunistic omnivore
♦ Dogs have evolved to eat what was available to them. They now produce amylase, a digestive enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates
♦ Dogs do not thrive on carbohydrates, but they can survive on them.
We know that two things make people wary of raw feeding - price and convenience. We have a great brand in store that is easy to feed and has some of the best prices out there on raw diets.
Northwest Naturals is a family owned and operated business based on family values. Our parent company began in the meat business in 1956, providing high quality meats for grocery and restaurant use. NW Naturals is made with the same high quality; USDA inspected and approved meats, in our USDA inspected facility, under the same processing regulations, that apply to our human food products. As we continue to grow, our commitment is to produce a quality product for your pet’s health.
For smaller dogs they have 6lb bags of nuggets that defrost quickly and are available in many protein options. The 6lb bag of chicken or turkey nuggets are $20 and bison is $24. These are also great to use as a topper for kibble fed dogs - even adding in some raw can be helpful.
For larger dogs they have 25lb boxes of 1lb dinner bars that snap into pieces and thaw very quickly. These are a special order item and make feeding your larger dog less expensive.
Right now in store we have free 1lb dinner bars in beef and chicken. Stop in and get one. We would love talk to you about how your dog can benefit from a raw diet and how you can add raw in an affordable way!

You say: "Dogs have evolved to eat what was available to them. They now produce amylase, a digestive enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates"
Can you please state your source for the statement that "dogs now produce amylase?"
Thanks you!
Tom

Hi Tom - I don't have one specific source. Based on my research dogs do not produce Salivary Amylase but they do produce Amylase in their pancreas and intestines. This allows digestion of carbohydrates - though not the most efficient digestion of these foods.
So when adding carbohydrates to my dogs diets I try to limit it to the items that are really nutrient beneficial. My belief is that a raw meat food model is best for all cats and dogs.
